KREWE DU ROUX GUMBO COOK-OFF

Cookoff Information

WHAT WE PROVIDE

Each contestant will be provided the following:

  • One table with table cloth
  • Sign with your gumbo number & space to write your gumbo name
  • Tasting cups, tasting utensils, napkins, plastic serving gloves
  • Electricity via extension cords (Please let us know if you will need this so we can accommodate your needs)
  • Voting ballots

WHAT TO BRING

Each contestant should provide the following:

  • Cook 1 pot of gumbo from scratch. Gumbo may be made beforehand or made onsite. May bring rice if desired, rice will not be judged.
  • Crockpot pot to keep gumbo warm, refill as needed
  • Extension cord/surge protector to connect to power
  • Serving utensils
  • Cleaning wipes/paper towels to clean up space
  • Ziplock bags/containers for left over gumbo
  • Folding chairs if desired
  • Crackers, bread, hot sauce if desired
  • Ice chest for items necessary for cooking

GUMBO COOK OFF CONTEST INFORMATION

  • Contestants may cook gumbo before the event or on-site if desired.
  • Gumbos will be divided into two categories: seafood and non-seafood
  • If made on-site, contestants must bring all required equipment and supplies to make it, keep warm, and serve.
  • If using a flame, must provide one fire extinguisher with a visible tag
  • Contestants will give out samples via provided tasting cups.
  • Contestants must serve their gumbo to guests during the tasting and stay at their assigned location until the tasting finishes
  • Please make sure your area is clean and all trash has been removed from your site before leaving
  • There will be two prize categories: Judge’s Pick and People’s Choice
  • The judge panel will be comprised of local chefs from area restaurants
  • Contestants will receive two food/bev tickets per Cook Off entry
  • Prizes will consist of gift cards, prizes, and first place will earn a seat at the judge’s panel for the 2023 Gumbo Cook Off

EVENT TIMELINE

8 AM – Cook Off contestant check in & setup begins

10:00 AM – Cook Off Contestants must be on site, set up

11 AM – Krewe Du Roux Event Starts, Music, Games

11:15 AM – Cook off contestants prepare 3 “Best Bowl” for judges. Samples will be presented to the judge’s table immediately

11:30 AM – Gumbo Tasting Begins, Music, Games

1:00 PM – Gumbo Tasting Ends, NG explanation, student story, monthly giving ask

2:00 PM – Chef’s choice live tasting of top 3, Winner

2:15 PM -People’s Choice Top 3, Winner

3:00 PM – Event ends, clean up areas

5:00PM – All contestants exit the premises
